Ever thought of doing something?
Can be big or small. Obviously I mean something bigger than watching the entire first season of Queer Eye in one sitting with a large Dominos meal and two tubs of Ben & Jerry’s to wash it down. That’s something. Something I’m very proud of. But you know what I mean.
This whole site/ page/ homage to my goddamn hand is something, and in the grand scheme of things something only very small, but it’s something I should have done, and had been encouraged by my friends to do for a long time. But for whatever reasons, obviously none of which good enough, I’d managed to put it off for quite a while.
Finally though, I’m doing it. And more importantly, I’m doing it with purpose.
In this short, easy, but inspiring read, David Hieatt, founder of Hiut Denim talks you through his philosophy and business practice of doing one thing well, and doing it with purpose. Sticking to your guns. Never compromising. Remembering where you came from and where you want to go. It’s sound, easy advice, and the kind of stuff you think you probably already know, but you just need to hear someone else say it to make it sink in and happen.
And ‘happen’ is the big one. “99% of business fail for one reason. They don’t start.” Take this #harrisonthehand bollocks for example. It’s been an idea for years, but nothing more, because I didn’t start. Now I’m throwing out hand jobs all over the place…
Once you get started there’s a whole lot more to do. He gives advice on story telling, hiring and firing, and understanding your brand. There’s also a really handy spot where he asks you 23 questions about your idea to help you realise in no uncertain terms what it is you want to do and how important it is to you.
There’s a whole series of Do books written by some similarly great and inspiring people. And if you get really into it and need that extra push, attend The Do Lectures. I did, and it was awesome, but that’s a hand job in itself.
But start, and start with Do/ Purpose/.
Just do it.
